Nursing Prerequisites

Nursing Student Checking Nursing Prerequesites

If you are going to school for a nursing degree, you will find that there are certain nursing prerequisites that you will need in order to be able to get your degree. While each school will vary slightly, there are certain prerequisites for nursing that are standard in each facility. Below is a list of the main prerequisites that you can expect to have on your list of classes to complete. In order to be considered as a nursing candidate you will need to complete these classes with a certain grade point average so that you may go forward with your education.

Each nursing student is expected to complete a certain amount of credit for various courses and those expected credits and courses are listed below.

  • 6 to 8 credits of Physiology and Anatomy.
  • 3 credits of Psychology
  • 4 credits of Chemistry
  • 3 credits of Sociology
  • 3 credits of Statistics
  • 3 credits of Nutrition
  • 4 credits of Microbiology

Since each college is different, you may find that you can substitute some classes for others. You may find that you can do this with such classes as Economics, Math or Psychology can be substituted for Statistics. You may also be able to transfer credits from a previous school as long as it is an accredited school. Keep in mind that the college will not tell you which class credits are transferable as they make it the responsibility of each student to be on top of what is needed.

The best way to know what you need and what you can transfer is to work closely with the guidance counselor at the school. The guidance counselor is very familiar with the programs offered by the college, therefore he or she will be your best ally especially where your nursing prerequisites are concerned. You want to be sure that you completely understand what is expected of you and what you need in order to get into the program that you want. Do not be afraid to ask questions as you do not want to end up having to try and squeeze in classes that are prerequisites for nursing at the last minute.

You MUST have all prerequisites fulfilled in order to start the main courses. If you do not, it can push your start date further out as you will have to spend another semester getting the missing class/classes completed. Keep in mind that many colleges now offer online classes, which makes it much easier for many students to fulfill their nursing prerequisites.

If you are trying to figure out what your prerequisites for nursing are, your best bet is to get together with the guidance counselor at the college. Together, the two of you can discuss what is needed and go over what credits you have that can be transferred. This will help you to plan your courses and get you going in the right direction.
